For Christmas my Mom got me a great gift - a sewing machine. This weekend I finally got down to a real project that involved using it - I made pillow covers.
I've had the fabric and the pillows since my Hubs and I moved into our first apartment... four years ago. For awhile I kept the fabric folded and pinned on the pillows, but that only looks so good for so long.
I was proud of myself because I had to troubleshoot the machine several times and I figured it out each time, with very little yelling even! More importantly, the pillow covers turned out great.
My second project is a little bigger - a t-shirt quilt. This is something I've wanted to do for longer than the pillows. I've had some squares cut for a long time, but this weekend I got down to business and cut a bunch more squares. I've got to get some more interfacing, but I've got a good start!
I feel blessed to have the sewing gene, because although my Mom just showed me how to use a machine last year, I think watching her use one for years when she used to make dolls for a living helped me catch on really quickly.
Plus, my Grama is a quilt making master, so I've got that going for me too.
I'm really looking forward to making many more projects on the machine, especially now that a new JoAnn's will be opening up at a convenient location. Before I would have had to drive like 45 minutes out of the way or go to a "fancy" fabric/quilt shop. Not that I don't like browsing "fancy" fabrics, but at this point, I'd like to save dollars on fabrics until I get more experienced.
