Zoo Day

The weather on Saturday was pretty beautiful for late February and we decided to take advantage by going to the zoo.

Technically it was Abel’s first trip, but we aren’t going to put it that way because it makes his Dad, who had to work, kind of sad.

Of course, Abel is too young to really get the animal watching part.  He spent much of the time sleeping and the rest of it looking around, though more at people walking by than at animals.

The closest he got to recognizing animals was in the bird building when a whistling duck whistled and then scuttled to it’s little pond to eat.  Abel noticeably heard it and looked at us like, “What was that?!”

We had arrived around lunchtime, but walked around a bit before deciding to go down Connecticut Ave for real food – the zoo doesn’t offer much in winter.  We saw the black squirrel on the way, in case you were thinking it was strange they had such an uncommon common animal in the zoo.

I say uncommon because you don’t see black ones very often.  Though I saw two that day.

After lunch we went back to the zoo and walked as fast as we could to see the big cats.  The zoo closes early in winter and we didn’t want to miss them.  We got lucky that the tigers were still out, though they were ready to be in – roaring and lingering by the door to their night spots.  It’s awesomely intense to see a tiger roar in real life, though the whistling duck got more of Abel’s attention than the tigers did.

It was a wonderful day and I look forward to future trips to the zoo with our little guy, the next time likely with Casey for our first official family visit.
