It’s Not the Heat, It’s the Humidity

If you want to know how I say that post title in my head, think Logger.

I stepped outside this morning to take a walk, pushing Abel in his stroller, and as we turned the first corner, it started to sprinkle.  I headed back inside and within minutes, sprinkle turned to heavy drizzle and it continued like that for hours.

By the time I put Abel down for his afternoon nap, I figured it would go on for the rest of the day, foggy and gray.  So I made tea and apple streusel muffins and got an inkling of fall.

By the end of Abel’s nap, though, the rain had stopped and the sun appeared with its friend, blue sky.  I was delighted by the departure of dreary and loaded Abel into his stroller for a trip to the grocery.

Subconsciously, based on walks earlier this week with coolish breezes, I guess I expected the rain would have cooled things down further and I had no reason to think jeans and sneakers would be a problem.

But no, it was still Virginia summer.  My inkling of fall dissolved into the thick, humid air, though my longing for it remained.  In fact, my longing for it burgeoned as my jeans clung heavier and heavier to my legs.

It’s the kind of sticky that isn’t fixed by air conditioning.  In fact, at first A/C just makes things worse.  And the next thing you know, you’re freezing.  It’s not a pleasant sequence of feelings and the consistency of this type of weather during Virginia summers has always been a con of living here.  And the presence of it as fall approaches?  That’s dreadful.

Thankfully, we are headed back to Vermont in a few days, where based on the forecast, fall is preparing to sidle in properly.  I’m praying it will be perfect Fair weather- just-right warm with mild temperatures and abundant sunshine, the evenings comfortably cool and clear.

And hopefully we’ll be able to bring some of that kind of weather back with us, unless of course Virginia can manage to elicit proper fall on it’s own by the time we return… or at least by September 22nd.  Because by then, the official first day of fall, I’m sure I’ll be raring to light pumpkin spice candles and bake pies like it’s my job, and that stuff just feels better when the weather encourages long sleeves and quilts and hot tea.
