BBQ Reviews, Kind Of

Friday night, Churchill Downs – Casey got the Home Stretch, which is 6” pulled pork, 6” brisket, and 12” of fries (more like about 8”).  I got a hot dog with all the fixins.

Casey said the pulled pork was very tasty, but the brisket wasn’t very good because it had a lot of fat and it was kind of like they just scraped the grill and served what had been burning there for awhile.

I had a hot dog, and it was cold by the time we got Casey’s meal, but I don’t think being hot and fresh would have helped it much.  Aw well.

Saturday at lunchtime, Bar-B-Que Caboose Cafe, Lynchburg, TN – Casey had the BBQ Plate, which is pulled pork with a bun, cajun beans and rice, and potato salad, and I had the smoked chicken salad.

Casey’s only complaint here was that there weren’t many options on the menu, but what he did get, he really enjoyed.  Apparently the beans and rice were especially good.

The smoked chicken salad was smoked chicken over crisp iceburg lettuce, with onions, tomatoes, croutons, and bacon bits.  I got it with ranch dressing and it was really yummy!

Saturday night, Jack’s Bar-B-Que, Nashville, TN – Casey got the combo plate with pork shoulder, brisket, and sausage, with baked beans and macaroni and cheese on the side; I got the smoked chicken (again) with macaroni and cheese and cinnamon apples on the side.

Casey was bummed because they ran out of ribs just before we got to the counter, so he got the sausage instead.  He said it was all good and rated Jack’s his second favorite of the weekend.

The smoked chicken was great and had a very similar taste to the smoked chicken at the Caboose Cafe.  So, it was a smoked chicken day for me, but there was nothing wrong with that!  The mac and cheese was creamy and delicious, and the cinnamon apples were a good sweet accompaniment.

Sunday at lunchtime, Rippy’s Ribs and Bar-B-Que, Nashville, TN – We ordered the “hog platter” and chips and queso.  The platter had ribs, sausage, pork loin, buffalo wings, onion rings, cheddar cheese, and pickles.

The chips and queso were really good.  The wings were alright and the pork loin was especially good with the BBQ sauce available on the table.  The onion rings were great, pickles are always great, and cheese is never turned down.  I didn’t eat the sausage, because I don’t really like sausage, but Casey did and I guess it was good.  Casey said the ribs were just alright, but I thought they were really delicious.  They had an amazing sweet glaze and I enjoyed them and found myself thinking about them the rest of the weekend.

Sunday night, Jim & Nicks Bar-B-Q tent, Nashville, TN – Casey had a pulled pork sandwich and cole slaw, both of which he enjoyed.  No picture taken!

Monday at lunchtime, Buddy’s Bar-B-Q, Knoxville, TN – Casey had the combination dinner with pulled pork, ribs, and beef, with beans and mashed potatoes on the side.  I had the chicken with corn on the cob and french fries on the side.  Both meals were served with Hush Puppies, which I didn’t really like, but I guess Casey thought they were okay.

Casey said this was the best he had all weekend.  He especially liked the ribs, way more than Rippy’s.

The chicken here was really good.  It fell off the bone and was even more delicious when dunked into their BBQ sauce.  The fries were average and the corn was okay, not that they matter much when you’ve got delicious chicken!

This post either made you really hungry or bored you to death, but Casey wasn’t really into giving me his reviews.  All he said was he likes BBQ and meat and so it was all good to him.

He rated Buddy’s #1 and Jack’s #2, but also said that the place he gets BBQ here in VA (Willard’s) is better than anything we had all weekend.

It was still a great trip, but next time we’ll go for the awesome honky tonks and fun nights out, with BBQ as a side bonus since he can get better at home!
