“We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: ‘We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!’”
If you know where that’s from, you might think I’m silly. But parts of it ring true, even if there are no aliens about to attack the earth.
Remember that freedom isn’t free and that many have fought, and are still fighting, for independence. And although the Fourth of July is an American holiday, there are people around the world fighting that fight every day.
God is good and he grants us the opportunity to be free and live independent, rich lives. Come together with those you love, tossing aside petty differences, judgment, and all that crap that gets in the way of our ability to live the life God has granted us, and let there be celebration in what we discover when there is nothing blocking His light.
Maybe that’s a little deep for a day marked by fireworks and family barbecues, but I was just feeling it.
I hope you feel it too.
Happy Fourth!
