Today was kind of a big day at work. First of all, I gave my notice. My dream of being a stay at home mom is coming true in just a few weeks. I haven’t really wrapped my head around it yet, so I don’t have much more to say about it right now.
Secondly, my lieutenant retired today. He’s worked at the department for 30 years and it was an emotional day. Our division took him, and another detective who is retiring today as well, out to lunch. This afternoon he had lots of visitors. Then a few minutes before it was time for him to go home, he signed off on the radio.
Lieutenant: Unit 21.
Dispatcher: Unit 21.
Lieutenant: Out of service for the duration.
Dispatcher: 10-4, good luck.
It was a pretty cool thing to hear. When he left the office for the last time, surrounded by well wishers, he kind of scooted by my desk quickly and said, “See you later, Christie.” He was already choked up and apparently it only got worse when he got in his car.
Thankfully I’ll see him next week for another officer’s retirement party, at which time he may be a little less overwhelmed. I mean, it must be pretty intense to walk out the door of a place you’ve worked for 30 years!
