Prayers, Please

Hurricane Irene was not too cruel to Northern Virginia.  We barely got any rain where we live and the wind was minimal, only sending small branches to the ground and at worse (that I saw) tearing the seal out of the Virginia state flag in front of our building.

Our home state of Vermont, on the other hand, is a completely different story.  The devastation is absolutely heartbreaking.  Casey and I have spent the past couple days clicking through pictures, in shock at the photos of places we recognize.

The house to the left is my old house, the one I grew up in.  My grandparents live across the street.  The river normally flows under a bridge up beyond where the people are standing, but the water was too much to flow under it, so it went around.

My grandparents’ side yard.  Mom took this picture, later in the day than the above picture, when she and Dad followed Meme and Grampa back to their home after they were evacuated and spent the day at my parent’s house.

Thankfully for our family and friends in our hometown, the damage there was minimal.  Sadly, part of that is due to a flood last year that they weren’t so prepared for.  The damage had already been done.

Other places in Vermont are far worse.  Roads have been destroyed, small towns have become islands with no way to leave, historic covered bridges have been destroyed or completely washed away.  Homes and workplaces have been flooded through and in some cases taken from their foundations.

So, today I ask for prayers for my home state, as well as other places up and down the coast that are picking up the pieces, and in some cases have lost so much there are no pieces.
