Traveling on Memorial Day

When planning on driving back to VA from VT on Memorial Day, I expect it to take longer than it usually would. Lots of people travel that day, and more people on the road typically equals slower travel times.

There are also other factors to take into consideration for why it takes longer:

1. Memorial Day parade preparations, such as slowly towing an apparently still working cannon up the street to its proper place:

2. A Memorial Day bike race that requires slowing down every few miles while they pass you in the opposite direction:

3. Going through a small town just after a parade has gone through, with people milling about beside and in the road…

4. Catching up with said parade so that you are just a few cars back and there are still kids waving when you go by (the vehicle two cars ahead was part of the parade):

5. Crazy rainstorms. I was fortunate to be on a more local road and not on the interstate for this. It started to rain so hard I could barely see in front of the car, so I pulled off into a parking lot to wait for it to pass.
It turns out pulling off was a good idea, because not long after I pulled off (within a few minutes), the road and the intersection I pulled in through was flooded with water.
The whole storm didn’t last long, and soon I was back on the road, where water still flowed fairly heavily down the sides of the road and into gutters.
There was only one big tree down in the road where I was driving, but lots of other small debris was all over. Fortunately, once I got on to the next section of interstate, things cleared off, including the traffic, and I made up some time.

It was grand when I finally got home and my Hubby was there, back from his trip, and ready to give me a hug and tell me about his adventures.
